Meet Literal Club: A New Social Book Platform

Meet Literal Club

Do you use a digital platform to track your reading journey?

Lately I’ve been trying out some new reading apps and one of them is Literal Club! It's a brand new invite-only social book platform that allows you to track your reading and creatively review your latest favorite. It’s a lot like Goodreads but with some more exciting features! I really love it. So, let me introduce you to Literal Club!

[AUGUST 2022 UPDATE]: You can now join without an invite code!

The Features

1 // Track Your Reading Journey + Build Your Library

Similar to other reading apps, you can curate your own personal, digital library by adding books to your Want To Read list, tracking when you start and finish a book, and organizing them into personalized shelves once you’re done. And you can seamlessly import your library from other platforms while setting up your profile. It was such a breeze to complete! I was able to continue playing around in the platform while my books imported without issue.

2 // Highlight Your Favorite Quotes + Add Notes

As you read, highlight your favorite quotes or moments by snapping a quick photo of the text. It'll instantly upload as a highlight which you can add notes to. That's kind of like your status update! You can also easily share these moments to any of your preferred social media platforms.

3 // Reviews, Keywords + Half-Stars

Once you’re done reading, you can show your immediate appreciation for your new favorite by adding descriptive keywords to it’s review. Posting my reviews on Literal Club is one of my favorite things. The keyword descriptors make it so easy to leave a quick review either if you’re on-the-go, in a hurry, or just want to get your initial feelings out about the book! This feature is seriously one of my favorites. It speaks soul deep to my word-loving-heart.

Another great review feature are the half-star ratings!! No more agonizing over rounding up or down, and clarifying what your rating is. AND. I just discovered that you can actually rate a book however you want with this platform! If you simply click on the “number” /5 rating when going through the review process, it will allow you to edit and populate your preferred rating. So you could enter 3.90 or 4.24 - basically whatever your heart desires. Love this!

4 // Book Clubs

For just your friends or a big community! Book Clubs is another up and coming feature on the platform - and being an admin of a virtual book club already - I'm really excited to try that out!! Moderators of a group can approve new members, add and remove books, adjust permissions allowing community involvement, and anyone in the club can post - be it highlights or just a comment! Use the Book Club feature to discuss certain topics or books, spark conversations around highlights and reviews, join Q&A’s with authors, and of course connect with fellow readers.

In my current virtual book club, we typically create a WhatsApp or Instagram group chat with all of the participating members that month. It’s basically just a big chat room where we discuss while we read! And I can see the Book Club feature of Literal Club being similar, but way more interactive and dynamic.

Compared To Other Apps

Compared to other apps, I’m finding Literal Club refreshing and innovative. The sleek, minimalist design makes use of the app simple and straightforward. And therefore, fun and easy to use. I love when things are uncomplicated, painless, and trouble-free! Their no-nonsense approach to providing solutions for problems other apps are failing to correct is monumental. And I must say, replying to comments is also effortless and can be done directly from the phone app!

HERE WERE SOME OF MY INITIAL NOTES WHEN I FIRST STARTED USING THE APP.

  • Status updates through highlights rather than reading progress.

  • Full and 1/2 stars!

  • Some covers may be missing, including alternate designs, but you can change the edition that you’re reading and there’s also an ISBN scanner.

  • Love the descriptive words section you can include with your reviews.

  • Desktop and app version.

  • Comment back feature is so easy on your phone!

Overall, Literal Club is primarily a digital library, reading tracker, and review tool, but it’s growth is a no-brainer. With dedicated readers leading the charge of this app, I’ve no doubt upcoming developments will be exciting and original, solving problems that other apps just can’t seem to. And I know even more novel features, like Book Clubs, are on their way in (ones that will specifically benefit the readers and users themselves the most) including a yearly tracking goal and reading challenge, and, at some point, potential monetary benefits!

My Favorite Detail

As I mentioned earlier, my favorite detail of this book platform has got to be the keyword descriptors under the review feature. Such a simple thing, but dynamic in its purpose and something I look forward to completing each time I finish a book.

Words matter, and the right words matter most of all.
