The Books I Read In June 2022

6 Books I Read In June

I really liked my reading experience in June. I felt like I did way more reading just for me (and not because of obligations or because I felt like I “had to”) and it felt so good!

I also got to a couple of genres that I don’t normally get to (at least alot less than fantasy and romance reads!) — historical fiction and a mystery thriller.

One of the best highlights was beginning an impromptu reread of the Throne of Glass series with one of my book besties!! Completely unplanned and 100% worth it! I’d been feeling nostalgic for this series for a while and it’s been magic being back in the world of Celaena and Aelin! Excited to continue with Queen of Shadows later this month 🤗

I also decided to try showing off my tabs, rather than hiding them, and I'm a bit obsessed with the aesthetic look of it 🤩😅

So, I read the Throne of Glass series 2 years ago with my first ever book club! It was just after I joined Bookstagram and gosh, what an experience. I loved it so much.

And now two years later, almost exactly, I’ve started a reread! Completely impromptu, but I’d been seriously nostalgic for this series. The one thing I loved about 2020 — this series and book club!

And it’s been so fun rereading with one of my book besties, Marisol. She’s the best. Check out her booksta here >> @marisolbarrera

I’ll be honest, the first time I read this book, I was on the verge of DNFing the series. Celaena felt so. young. to me and immature.

But as the series progresses, you definitely figure out that’s by design.

I ended up loving the magic and world so much, it kind of made up for it. And Celaena grew on me as this book progressed the first time around.

Reading it the second time through — I enjoyed it immensly more!! I even upped my rating to a 4!

I feel like I have such a better understanding of who Celaena is after finishing the series the first time that this book just felt so much richer to me.

Book 2’s experience was really similar to book 1. Even the first time around, I loved book 2 so much more.

That twist at the end is ON. POINT. It’s the best. That for sure hooked me the first time around and I loved it even more this time.

One of my forever favorites in the series. It feels SO different from books 1 and 2.

If the ending of book 2 hooked me, this book sold me on the series.

And it was still a favorite this time around.

From the new characters and growth of the world, and the magic and adventure — oof. Gimme more!

Okay, okay - I actually really enjoyed this overall!

The first and second halves almost felt like 2 separate books. I was really intrigued by the first half and the murder mystery aspect.

I liked the second half for different reasons, but not much happens for a while - it's more Sera just getting to know Ash and his world, and I honestly struggled again with the heavy Q&A dialogue in that part.

But the last 150 pages were exciting! There's lots of similarities with FBAA.

Overall, I think it was a great start to this spin off series!

Wow. I feel like historical fiction books always 'wow' me and leave me feeling a little shook and out of body. This was a nice change of pace for me!

It's one of those books that leaves you feeling simultaneously melancholy and moderately, mostly content by the end. It's that sad-happy feeling, your heart swelling with emotion.

And despite the intricate plot and overall content, this book is easy reading. It's not overly detailed in its descriptions which allows for the story to just unfold before you. I think it's partially why I flew through it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this!

Things We Do In The Dark

This was just okay for me.

I think the way the story was written and presented gave me enough room to easily connect the dots, so nothing felt too twisty or mind blowing, just generally kind of shocking.

It's definitely ominous the way the story unfolds and how the author slips in these little clues here and there and at the end of chapters through different character perspectives, but I didn't find myself completely hooked.

I did want to find out all that happened, though! There's a lot of dark themes in this, too, so just be prepared.
