My Reading Goals for 2023

My Reading Goals for 2023

Have you set or started thinking about any goals for the year? Setting reading goals has been one of my favorite aspects of delving deeper into my reading journey and experience. I’ve found that it’s a great way to capture a lot of different facets about reading that you either want to try or finally complete. Like borrowing more from the library or trying an audiobook! There’s so many different ways you can go with it.

In 2022, I had a slew of varying goals. I think I may have gone a little too far with them, ha! Not only was I trying to track all the ARCs I was receiving, but I desparately wanted to catch up on my NetGalley reads plus read several backlist books I kept putting off. It was… overwhelming to say the least! I ended up promptly ignoring that list about halfway through the year. BUT. I did complete a few of the goals and those are the ones I ended up rolling over to 2023 to focus on as well. The ones that worked best for me were new-to-me authors as well as selecting a couple of rereads (based on sequels releasing that year), new book series, and a few new standalones to read. I even set a reading goal number, but that was not the one I adhered to or even thought about during the year. It was a goal that, at the time, I really wanted to achieve, but knew it wasn’t the moment yet - if that makes sense.

So, this year, I’ve set similar goals but have scaled backed tremedously on the ones I’d like to achieve. I’m very happy with this list and think it’s incredibly doable. I can’t wait to start tackling it further! Here are my reading goals for 2023.

The Goals

1 // Number Of Books: 100

This was the number of books I put on my reading goal sheet for 2022, but new it was a pipe dream at the time. The number I focused on for 2022 was 75. But for 2023, I knew in my bones it was time to give this number a shot! It’s definitely pushing it for me, but I have a plan and I’ve been sticking to it so far. To complete this goal, I’ve set a reading pace of 2 books per week. When it’s broken down like that it feels immensely more achievable and so far, it’s been that way. I know throughout the course of the year this will change and vary, but I’m confident it will all even out over time.

2 // Authors To Read

These are my new-to-me authors that I’d like to try this year! I’ve also included the books I’m hoping will make this happen for me.

3 // Book Series To Read

I absolutely love reading book series. And naturally, I have a huge backlist of them! All of these have been on my radar since 2020 and for some reason just keep getting put off. I’ve actually included all of them in my 23 Backlist Books In 2023 challenge! More on that later.

4 // Rereads

Rereading was something I heavily gravitated towards in 2022. I never considered myself much of a rereader. The Harry Potter books were the only ones I reread frequently back in the day. But last year, with so many anticipated sequels coming out, and fantasy ones at that, I knew to make my experience with those book 2’s the most successful, rereading would go a long way! In between all that, as well, I picked up Throne of Glass just to reread for fun with one of my book besties! Here are the books I’d love to reread in 2023.

THRONE OF GLASS BOOKS 6-7: I’d love to continue and finish my Throne of Glass reread! Next book up for me is Tower of Dawn.

ACOTAR SERIES: I’ve been itching to reread this series after restarting Throne of Glass! I’m hoping I’ll at the very least start my reread this year.

EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE: I started rereading this book last year. It was a comfort read for me during a harder time. I’d love to restart my reread and add in the audiobook for an even more immersive experience.

THE DAEVABAD TRILOGY: This one has only recently started to call to me again! I read this series originally in 2020 and lately, I’ve just been missing Nahri and Dara so much. I’d love to tandem this series, too, with the audiobooks this time.

5 // Backlist Books

You may have seen this trend going around Bookstagram and BookTok in the last few months about reading 23 backlist books in 2023. I’ve decided to participate in that challenge! It had been weighing on me heavily that I had so many owned-unread books that seemed to just be piling up. I knew I wanted to refocus in the new year and put my energy into reading those already-owned books on my shelves. I won’t list them all out here, but you can check them out in my upcoming blog post - 23 Backlist Books In 2023 - where I highlight them and the challenge I’m taking part in! Suffice it to say, I have 27 backlist books - books I already own that have been sitting unread for several years - that I’m committing to read before the year is out! I’m really excited about that. #backlistbooks23
