5 Ways I Combat Overwhelm

5 Ways I Combat Overwhelm

How do you deal with overwhelm? I'm someone who can easily get overwhelmed. I'm such an overthinker! And, as a creative, there's typically an endless amount of tasks I'd like to get done everyday and new ideas that I have. When everything takes time, it can sometimes feel like I just don't have time for anything.

Here are a few ways I've learned to cope over the years:

1. Make a list and plan it out

I'm an endless list maker. Everyday I start a new one and try not to get stuck on what I didn't get done yesterday. All I’ve used consistently is a spiral bound, lined notebook and everyday is a new page… and I just write. I get all the thoughts and ideas out of my head and it always feels so. good. Some days I’ll look back to jog my memory on other previous to-do’s (or want to-do’s lol) and on a lighter day, I may finally finish that previous list. I love when I can look back and see that I’ve already finished one or several of those old to-do’s, too! That always feels good, and typically, my to-do’s tend to stay the same for a fairly consistent amount of time. It’s just a matter of finding the free time to dedicate to it.

2. Get inspired

Sometimes I get overwhelmed simply because I know there's something I'd like to get done, but I haven't had that spark of an idea for *how* I'd like to get it done. Getting inspired can look different on any given day. Sometimes it’s scrolling Pinterest. Sometimes it’s reading one of my favorite blogs. Other times, it’s getting away from all the devices, getting outside or being active. Sometimes even cleaning or folding laundry or doing the dishes helps! I know — crazy right?! It’s something about redirecting my mind that opens up those creative pathways again. I’ll get so many creative thoughts in these downtime moments. Music is also huge for me!

3. Complete a simpler task first

Is there an email you've been meaning to reply to or even a text? I find that completing a few smaller tasks first before getting to my bulk load really helps. Even focusing on a few admin tasks before the creative ones seem to bolster some accomplishment as well as motivation. I actually really love admin days — while not always the most exciting tasks, they seem to help my creative brain recover on occasion and leave me with a sense of accomplishment in checking things off my to-do list.

4. Just do it

Whatever is causing you the biggest overwhelm, if you can decipher it, go do that now. Digging into this area of overwhelm can be scary, but also very exciting. Scary because the thing causing you the overwhelm is likely also causing some stress and therefore avoidance is kicking in! Maybe it’s a big opportunity for you or just something you want to get right. I’ve been there! And you know what, JUST DO IT. Even if it's not perfect. Stop the overthink and procrastination! I know that’s easier said than done, believe me. I’m the epitome of an overthinking perfectionist, but it’s so worth just going for it! You got this and will figure things out along the way, too. Just do it. Now. Go, go.

My husband reminded me of this the other day when it was hitting me hard and it helped. A LOT.

5. Take a break

This is really similar to #2. A lot of times, my motivation and creative juices start flowing again when I switch gears, get off my devices, and stop forcing the next thing. Music seems to be the big help in this area for me, too, and getting moving! Cleaning, exercising, and even running an errand helps (typically all with a great playlist!). It frees my mind somehow and I’m able to reconnect with my creative side and that spark again.

And you know what? Some days the best way to combat overwhelm, what helps the most is doing nothing. No plans, no checking things off a to-do list… just being and resting and living in the moment. For me, that can be my happy place. Something that’s just for me. And, when I say nothing, I’m still always doing something… like reading, writing, or binge watching a favorite movie or show. Just having a day that’s solely dedicated to whatever my happy place is, is so necessary. Don’t forget that!

Tell me about a time (or way) you broke free of and combatted overwhelm.
