Beach Read by Emily Henry

Beach Read is everything I love in a rom-com!

It’s fast-paced, witty, and romantic and also heartfelt, real, and raw. I found myself laughing out loud, crying, gasping, and feeling so at home reading this. I loved the beachy, writer vibe, and the growth of Gus and January, both together and individually, was just all the good feels. And OH MY, GUS! Steamy, heartthrob? Frikin’ CHECK!

I need more of these easy romances in my life. Such a fun and cute story!

The Story

Beach Read is a heartfelt, enemies to lovers, and what I’d call a second chance romance. It’s about two writers who start out at odds with each other, are each going through their own life struggles, and somehow find their way into each other’s lives. There are obstacles and some strife. And of course, miscommunication and situational stress. But ultimately, we and the main characters get this beautiful happy ever after as they find healing in each other’s arms.

Goodreads Synopsis

A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

They're polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

The Characters

January - A romance writer dealing with a recent loss who still believes wholeheartedly in happy endings and has always seen Augustus Everett as a rival.

Gus - Acclaimed literary fiction author who’s been through some stuff and would rather break his reader’s hearts than see his characters happy.

Steamometer

🔥 - tension-filled, intense attraction, open-door policy

Ooh, guys, the steam is so good. There’s flirty banter, tension, a whole lot of build-up, and then IT HAPPENS, and it’s awesome. I do believe there’s an office and bookshelf involved, so that should satisfy any bookworm who loves steam, so you’re welcome.

Overall Thoughts

This was book 25 of 2020 for me! And I have to say, I’ve never ever in my life read 25 books within a year! I’m so thankful for the choice to read, for books, for authors, for publishers, editors, creators — all the people that make books A THING. I AM THANKFUL FOR YOU!

Beach Read was my third read of July and was SUCH a cute story! It had everything I love in a rom-com. The writing and dialogue were lively and clever, the story was fast-paced and romantic, but also heartfelt and raw. I laughed out loud, cried, gasped, and felt so at home reading this. I loved the beachy, writer vibe, and Gus and January both together and individually were just all the good feels. I need more of these easy romances in my life. Such a fun and cute story — a perfect summer read!⁣
